Educator

Inspiring future generations of musicians and performers is one of the most rewarding parts of Jack’s career, with years of experience encouraging all ages, abilities and dispositions: from shy four-year-olds and self-conscious teenagers, through to adults and fellow professionals.

Jack has been teaching both privately and in schools and colleges across the UK, Europe and the UAE for over 12 years, and continues to be in demand as an educator and workshop leader. As a musical theatre vocal coach, Jack has taught students on the degree and diploma courses for Urdang Academy and Laine Theatre Arts, as well as teaching for ArtsEd, Razzamataz, PQA, Finch Stage School and Trinity Youth Theatre. Jack also worked as Music Supervisor and Head of Singing from 2013-2020 with then-award-winning youth theatre company The Talentz, where alongside teaching weekly ensemble singing classes, he devised engaging schemes of work for 4- to 21-year-olds.

In recent years, Jack’s students have won scholarships and exhibitions to schools and junior conservatoires, as well as succeeding in competitions and music exams up to diploma level. For those more focussed on a career in performing, Jack has helped students reach the next stage of their training, whether that’s university, music college or a leading London drama school. Jack has also delivered courses for the National Operatic and Dramatic Association’s annual summer school.

Jack spends two days a week at St Michael’s Prep School in Kent, where alongside peripatetic piano and music theory teaching, he conducts orchestras and ensembles, acts as the lead piano accompanist and leads weekly academic enrichment classes for Music Scholars.

As such, and with a busy performing career, Jack has limited availability for regular weekly lessons – but it’s definitely worth enquiring as slots do open up! Jack also offers one-off lessons for those wishing to troubleshoot a particular problem or simply check in with a professional MD and pianist. Jack teaches privately from his home in Rochester.

Online lessons are also available. Jack is equipped to facilitate high-quality lessons via Zoom direct from his studio, with overhead HD piano cameras and digital whiteboard facilities for music theory lessons. Although, whilst this technology can provide opportunities that might otherwise be missed, in Jack’s experience there is no substitute for the interaction of a face-to-face lesson.

Jack is also available to teach classes and workshops internationally and has vast experience teaching those for whom English is not their first language: from primary school musical theatre singing projects to delivering class workshops in GCSE and A-level composition.
